In our series “Consultants tell their stories”, today we want to introduce you to Ingrid Michoel. Ingrid is an experienced bioengineer with Pauwels Consulting.
“I have always had a great interest in the pharmaceutical industry.”
Ingrid, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Ingrid Michoel - Bioengineer with Pauwels ConsultingI am Ingrid Michoel, bioengineer with Pauwels Consulting. After graduating from the University of Leuven in 2001, I started my career at the Ministry of Agriculture.

Since I have always had a great interest in the pharmaceutical industry (pharmacy was one of the possible majors in my study) I applied with Schering Plough (now MSD) in 2003.

At MSD I started as a Quality Systems Engineer. I was responsible for implementing standards. After a few years I was promoted to shift supervisor for the production of tablets.

How did you get in touch with Pauwels Consulting?

After six years of supervision, I wanted to start working on a project basis. During my search for new opportunities I got in touch with Pauwels Consulting.

Pauwels Consulting serves an interesting mix of clients. As a result Pauwels Consulting can help me gain experience with different projects and companies. This immediately appealed to me.

What do you do in your free time?

When I’m not at work, I try to spend as much time as possible with my family. I have two little children. Finding a healthy balance between work and family is an everyday challenge, but one I have been able to manage well so far.

“Above all I want to broaden my expertise.”
You currently work on a project at a large pharmaceutical company. Is this your first assignment through Pauwels Consulting?

Yes it is. As a consultant I hope to get the opportunity to work with various companies though. I like working with this pharmaceutical company, but in the future I may want to work with other companies as well.

What does your current assignment entail?

Bioengineering with Pauwels ConsultingAs a Product (Technical Transfer) Lead I am responsible for the introduction of new medicines in a sterile production environment. I am responsible for preparing, monitoring and coordinating the production of clinical batches.

I am part of the co-development team. Within this team, each project engineer is responsible for one or two new products. We also work as a backup for each other.

“Every project brings new challenges.”
What do you like about your project?

Since my team is working closely with the Research & Development team in the US, I am in the front seat to witness how medicines are being developed. That is a very interesting process.

And every project brings new challenges. I find it very interesting to find good solutions for every challenge we encounter.

As a consultant I would now like to further develop my expertise in a specific domain such as improvement management, and to use this knowledge as an added value in every new project I work on.

Is there anything you don’t like about your current job?

When you reach the end of a project, there are fewer challenges and more routine work. I have not yet reached this stage in my current project though. The company I am working with receives new product orders on a continuous basis. So I have a very varied job.

“Work is getting more fun when you immerse yourself in the culture of the company you are working for.”
Do you have any tips for future colleagues?

It is easier, more constructive and more fun when you participate in a project as if you are employed with your client. Go with the flow of the people that surround you. I would advise you to immerse yourself in the culture of the company you are working for as soon and as good as possible.
