Our automation engineerings and process engineers help companies to improve their productivity, operational reliability and performances in a cost-effective manner, without wasting raw material.
Industrial automation and process automation
Automation or automatisation is a technology with which you implement a process or procedure without human power, but including the evident economic advantages. Within industrial automatisation, also referred to as process automatisation or process automation, the following is most often used:
- robotics, machines and sensors;
- programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to control machines;
- process control systems (also known as PCS or DCS) to control industrial processes;
- SCADA packages to visualize these processes, to enable operators to intervene when required.
Effective process automation means being able to program, to configure and (most certainly) to solve issues regarding PLCs, drives, sensors, remote I/O and similar. A good automation engineer should actually be a ‘process engineer’ as well. After all, knowledge of the process is essential to solve issues quickly. Moreover, it is also essential to be able to implement optimizations.
Challenges within process automation
Currently, many companies involved in automation, as well as their automation engineers, are confronted with the ever-increasing complexity and diversity of the various automation domains: PLC/SCADA, HIMI, drives, E&I, etc.
In earlier days, a PLC program was the ‘equivalent’ of an electrical diagram. This could be read by practically any electrical engineer, at least in theory. However, it has now evolved into a complete programming environment, whereby, among others, knowledge of software architecture and patterns is a must.
Moreover, the difference between IT and automation is continuously decreasing. Far-stretching integration with higher-level IT systems has more or less become the standard. However, many automation engineers mainly have a background in electrical engineering and no IT expertise. This is why integration with IT is a challenge for many of them.
Furthermore, automation engineers must increasingly specialize, since it has become almost impossible to be an expert in all automation domains. This is the reason why many companies require the assistance of external experts.
