A foothold in the Netherlands

23 Jan 2020
Today it was announced that Pauwels Consulting is including the Dutch Developers.nl in the group. This acquisition follows shortly after those of HCM and AlphaZ, and fits within Pauwels Consulting's ambitious growth strategy in the Netherlands.

So it’s time for a chat with Mark Smit and Maarten de Boer, respectively founder and general manager of Developers.nl, and Bert Pauwels, managing director of Pauwels Consulting.

About Mark, Maarten and Developers

Mark Smit, a husband and father of two daughters, started his career at Pink Roccade in 2000. He then moved on to earn his spurs as a commercial manager at various SAP consulting firms, until he founded his first little IT project sourcing company in 2010. He then founded Developers.nl in 2012. Mark was responsible for the day-to-day management for many years and grew the company into Developers.nl in its current form. In 2017, Maarten took over as leader and Mark became an external consultant so that he could focus on other challenges.

Mark and Maarten are childhood friends and both are from Spijkenisse, near Rotterdam. Maarten has been at the company since the very beginning. “I originally came from the automotive sector and I didn’t immediately know if IT was something for me”, he laughs. “Mark asked me to help him with implementing a system in his organisation. Then I started getting involved in operational matters and, in the end, I found it very enjoyable, because of the constant contact with people.” Mark and Maarten also have similar mindsets. “We both share the traditional Rotterdam trait of saying what we do and doing what we say.” Maarten started off as a recruiter, was appointed field manager when new employees joined and eventually became general manager in 2017.

Over the years, a pleasant corporate culture has been developed within Developers.nl. “Our people come first”, says Mark. “These are the people who make the difference with our customers”, adds Maarten.

Tech Nights and Devpoints

Staff are given support with monthly Tech Nights, IT workshops with an extra angle. “They’re also fun and exciting networking opportunities”, explains Mark. Every year, the firm also organises teambuilding events and trips with partners. Every employee is also given a fixed budget and conference days every year, which they can use to attend IT conferences. Devpoints is a points system with which employees can accumulate extra budget by organising activities and workshops, writing blogs, etc.

Both Mark and Maarten highly value the human aspect. They want their employees to feel good, so they can give the best of themselves and remain loyal.

Bert Pauwels consulting

Customization

The customers are SMEs, but also public authorities and multinationals. Developers.nl is the place to go for every company that needs a customised application. It has developers on board who go beyond simply building a website, they enjoy solving complex problems with unusual applications.

The developers are what make the company special

Developers.nl’s strength is the quality of the expert it assigns to the project. He has to be at the top of his game and Developers.nl knows how to attract him. “We don’t work on a project basis. Our client manages the project and we find the experts needed to implement it”, explains Maarten.

Realise growth in the Netherlands

“This acquisition by Pauwels Consulting is a necessary step to guarantee the continuous growth of Developers.nl”, explains Mark. “We grew strongly for eight years, but this flattened out almost completely last year. We reached a threshold where we needed a helping hand from a bigger partner with the knowledge and resources to grow.”

“Bert and I clicked immediately. His vision of doing business and the way he thinks and acts were important factors that made us want to sit down at the table”, says Mark. “Bert’s priority is also the staff, it’s all about the people. In addition, he wants to do business pleasantly and honestly. That vision, in combination with his openness and transparency, made me decide to work with Bert.”

“There was immediately a good vibe between Mark, Maarten and me”, Bert confirms. This positive understanding was partly due to the technical expertise being in line with the activities of Pauwels Consulting and partly due to Developers.nl’s corporate culture. “Culture and values are underestimated, but I think they’re the most important elements in any acquisition”, says Bert. The corporate culture, values and services all complement each other perfectly.

The future

“There are plenty of IT projects in the Netherlands. This number will only increase and it’s all about customisation”, says Mark. “However, the war on talent also applies to finding the right developers. With Pauwels Consulting’s help, we can grow even further in this area”, says Maarten.

It’s no secret that Pauwels Consulting wanted to extend its operations to the Netherlands, so it could help international customers across national borders. Developers.nl offered the ideal opportunity to make this a reality. It’s a company with a fantastic team, composed of specialist developers who offer added value.

“Never change a winning team”, Bert announces. “Nothing will change for employees.” It’s a win-win situation, where combining strengths brings benefits, such as knowledge sharing, international career opportunities, etc.

Pauwels Consulting is taking over all Developers.nl’s employees and services. Founder Mark Smit and general manager Maarten de Boer will remain on board even after the transition process to further develop the services. Following this acquisition, the Pauwels Consulting team now consists of more than 700 experts in the fields of life sciences, engineering and IT spread across Belgium, the Netherlands and France.

Pauwels Consulting acquires Health Care Management

09 Oct 2019
Pauwels Consulting, the Belgian recruitment and consulting firm for life sciences, engineering and IT profiles, acquires Health Care Management (HCM). This acquisition follows the recent acquisition of AlphaZ and reflects Pauwels Consulting’s ambitious growth strategy.

HCM has been specialising in the outsourcing of medical representatives since 1998. HCM’s consultants work as ‘medical liaisons’ for pharmaceutical companies and other life sciences companies. They advise doctors, pharmacists, hospitals and other healthcare institutions on the effects and benefits of registered medicines and other products. The HCM team currently numbers 25 highly trained employees with medical and commercial backgrounds.

“HCM is a financially healthy and profitable company with experienced employees”, says Robert Huybrechts, founder and manager of HCM. “To ensure the continuity of my business after my retirement, I was looking for a reliable acquirer with the necessary knowledge and experience who shared my philosophy and passion. I immediately clicked with Bert Pauwels and I’m looking forward to working with his team. HCM was a small family, but from now on we’re part of a large family.”

“HCM represents a part of the life sciences market where we weren’t active”, continues Bert Pauwels. “We were already providing our life sciences customers with support in almost all preproduction, production and postproduction phases. The acquisition of HCM means we now have an experienced team on board that can advise doctors, hospitals and other healthcare institutions on the effects and benefits of our customers’ products. This acquisition broadens our services for our life sciences customers significantly.”

Pauwels Consulting is acquiring all HCM’s services and employees. Founder Robert Huybrechts will remain on board even after the transition process to further expand the services under the Pauwels Consulting flag. After this acquisition, the Pauwels Consulting team will have a total of more than 650 experts in the fields of life sciences, engineering and IT.

_______________________________________________________

Gentlemen, congratulations on this agreement! Robert, can you introduce yourself briefly?

Robert: I’m Robert Huybrechts, 64 years old, married and (grand)father of three sons and three grandchildren. I started my career as a medical representative in the health industry, where I advised doctors on the effects and benefits, in a first phase, of existing medicines and, in a second phase, of experimental medicines. It meant I was the ‘medical liaison’ between doctors and the pharmaceutical manufacturer I was working for. An exciting job! In just over twenty years, I had five jobs at various international companies in the pharmaceutical and dental sector. For example, I was a product manager and a sales and marketing director.

I learned important things at every ‘foreign’ company. At my Japanese employer, I learned to compromise, I learned scientific rigor from my Swiss colleagues, I learned to speak to an audience at a French company and in America I learned some important financial lessons. I’ve travelled a lot, which has been hard but instructive!

How and when did you start Health Care Management?Overname Health care management

Robert: In 1998, I was at a crossroads in my life. My employer at the time was restructuring and my position as European sales and marketing director was decentralised. I had to decide between looking for a new job in the health sector or starting my own business. It didn’t take me long to realise that starting my own business was the next step I wanted to risk.

Just before the end of my first year, I signed my first customer. The second customer followed quickly and that’s how HCM was born. In the beginning, HCM mainly provided medical representatives to pharmaceutical companies. Later, we also specialised in bespoke projects.

How does HCM position itself in this competitive market?

Robert: There are two major international outsourcing specialists for medical representatives in the life sciences industry. These companies dominate approximately 70 % of the market. There are also local players, such as HCM. We support life sciences companies with the promotion of new products, products that are not part of their core business or products for which there are (as yet) no internal advisors. Each of our consultants is responsible for commercialising up to three products of one manufacturer or three non-conflicting products of different manufacturers. Our work is very personal. We really know our customers and their products.

We never intended to make HCM one of the larger players, but we did want to be a qualitative and serious player that was taken into account. We got to where we are by working hard, acting proactively and being honest and passionate.

I’m proud that our transparency and honest approach have made HCM one of the most profitable companies in the sector. Our team now numbers 25 people and we operate in Belgium and Luxembourg. In Belgium, we’re also the ‘oldest’ company that has never undergone substantial changes, such as an acquisition or joint venture.

Bert, I see that you agree with Robert?

Bert: Indeed, that’s what I call entrepreneurship. Initially, those were the cultural characteristics that I noticed most about Robert and his company. They played a decisive role in the acquisition. HCM matches the values and vision of Pauwels Consulting perfectly. At Pauwels Consulting, we also work hard for and alongside our customers and consultants, day in day out. That can only be maintained with passion.

How does this acquisition fit in with your plans?

Robert: There’s still a lot of potential in the health market, so I hope this acquisition represents the start of a second period of rapid growth for HCM.

Bert: HCM represents a part of the life sciences market where we weren’t active. We were already providing our life sciences customers with support in almost all preproduction, production and postproduction phases. The acquisition of HCM means we now have an experienced team on board that can advise doctors, hospitals and other healthcare institutions on the effects and benefits of unknown or little-known registered medicines. This cooperation therefore broadens our services significantly. From now on, we can also help our life sciences customers to marketing their medicines.

Robert: All our employees have (para)medical or scientific training, alongside relevant commercial skills. They’re flexible, enthusiastic and hypermotivated and therefore a great asset to life sciences companies that have too few people to promote their entire product portfolio. I still anticipate lots of growth in the world of medical consultancy.

Looking at consultancy services in other European countries, I notice that Belgium is lagging behind to some extent. The employees at European organisations tend to be 80 % permanent staff and 20 % freelancers or consultants. In Belgium, only 10 % are consultants. That’s why I believe the market for consultancy services in Belgium will continue to grow.

pauwels consulting acquisitie health care management

In that case, why did you decide to leave HCM?

Robert: Although I’m only 64 years old, I want to enjoy life more with my wife, children and grandchildren. Before I could take this step, I wanted to leave HCM in good hands. Since my children are incredibly busy with their own careers and businesses, I decided to look for a suitable acquirer. An acquirer with the same philosophy and drive and with which I could continue to cooperate well.

How did you come into contact with Bert and Pauwels Consulting?

Robert: I had a good friend and advisor with whom I’d been working for a while. He knew that I was looking for someone to take over HCM and take good care of it. It had to be someone with knowledge and experience and, preferably, someone with whom I clicked immediately. In addition, I followed the acquisition of Vandycke & Partners and Mediconsult from the sidelines. Businessman Michel Vandycke, an acquaintance of mine, successfully left these companies to Pauwels Consulting. Everything was pointing to Bert Pauwels and Pauwels Consulting, so here we are! I’m very satisfied with the entire process. I’m also very grateful that my oldest son has been at my side giving support the whole time.

Bert: The transaction was conducted in a very friendly manner, right from the first meeting to the signature! Robert and I clicked right away. During such conversations, I always try to see things from the other person’s perspective. I always wonder how I would feel if I was sitting on the other side of the table. That’s the only attitude that allows you to complete a positive and, above all, balanced transaction. That’s exactly what happened.

Charles Antoine, Robert’s son, did indeed play a special role in all this. He’s very positive. That certainly had a good impact on the negotiations. While it was an emotional process for Robert, Charles Antoine played the part of the rational voice perfectly.

Acquisition of HCM by pauwels consultingYou seem to have become friends!

Bert: Yes, you could put it that way! We’ve now known each other for a little over two years and as an entrepreneur, I always enjoy meeting like-minded people. I’ve noticed that Robert has the same philosophy and approach as me. A problem is therefore not a problem for us: it’s the sum of a number of smaller challenges that you have to face! I’m pleased that Robert and I can now take on those challenges together.

Do you have any concrete plans for the future, Robert?

Robert: During the transition period, I will ensure that everything runs smoothly. However, I don’t want to stop there. Afterwards, I will also continue to work for the expansion of our services under the Pauwels Consulting flag, so I’m not planning on leaving quite yet.

It’s reassuring to know that my life’s work is in good hands and that I can continue to work on a common vision, without having to worry about my succession. And, of course, I’m going to enjoy life together with my family more from time to time.

Bert: Rightly so. You should definitely do that, Robert. You’ve more than earned it!

Thank you very much for this conversation, gentlemen, and good luck with this new cooperation.

Pauwels Consulting organizes ISO 9001:2015 workshops for companies

07 Oct 2019
The goal of this workshop is to help your company’s top management deal efficiently with ISO 9001:2015 and identify and utilize both the risks and the commercial benefits and opportunities.

Compared to the previous standard, ISO 9001:2015 places much more emphasis on leadership and commitment of top management with regard to the quality management system. Top managers are willing to get involved in this, but often don’t know where to start. To help your company’s top management implement ISO 9001 and prepare the associated audits, Pauwels Consulting is organising ISO 9001:2015 workshops.

What is the goal of our ISO 9001:2015 workshop?

The goal of this workshop is to help your company’s top management deal efficiently with ISO 9001:2015 and identify and utilise both the risks and the commercial benefits and opportunities. In this process, our consultants act as both facilitators who provide structure and take notes and as moderators to stay efficient and relevant.

During the workshop, we provide your top management with a framework and a road map with ready-made questions that an auditor can ask during an ISO audit. This allows you to prepare properly.

What does the ISO 9001:2015 workshop involve?

  1. Preparation

We will send you and your colleagues the necessary documentation with an overview of the workshop and all the questions and tools that we will be providing. This allows you to prepare properly.

  1. Determination of the responsibilities and risk-based thinking

During the workshop itself, we first let you know the responsibilities of the top management under ISO 9001:2015. Then we look at risk-based thinking, an important aspect of the standard.

  1. Brainstorming session based on SWOT analysis and PESTEL analysis

Following this, we organise participants in groups for brainstorming sessions:

  • What are the key internal and external issues (positive and negative factors) that determine your strategy?
  • What issues do we prioritise?
  • Which internal and external stakeholders are present?
  • What are the requirements and expectations of these stakeholders?

The participants turn up with the content, while we offer a framework and tools, such as the PESTEL analysis and SWOT analysis.

  1. Discussion to arrive at a jointly agreed canvas

Afterward, a discussion takes place on the basis of these brainstorming sessions in order to arrive at a jointly agreed canvas and together provide answers to important questions such as:

  • What is the nature of the context within which our organisation has to operate?
  • Who are our organisation’s internal and external stakeholders?
  • How do I strategically deal with the stakeholders, risks and opportunities that we have identified?
  • What questions might an auditor ask and how do I answer them?
  1. Determination of the actions, people responsible for the actions and schedule

Once everything has been identified and priorities set, the final step is to determine the actions and people responsible for the actions and draw up the schedule. In this way, you can define or adjust a policy based on the requirements and expectations of your stakeholders and the risks and opportunities within your organisation.

How long does a workshop last?

An ISO 9001:2015 workshop is spread over two to four half days, depending on the complexity of your company, the already existing knowledge and implementation of ISO 9001:2015 and the availability of the participants. In this context, it is particularly important that all members of management participate, otherwise the whole exercise is pointless and you will get a skewed view of stakeholders and factors which play a role in the strategy.

Are you interested in an ISO 9001:2015 workshop or support for your audit?

Pauwels Consulting acquires AlphaZ

04 Jul 2019
We are happy to announce the acquisition of AlphaZ, a Ghent based consulting firm specialized in engineering. The ambitious company quickly grew out to be an established value in the consultancy world and is a great match with Pauwels vision for the future.

AlphaZ is a sustainable company that is part of the TEG Group, founded by Niels Colson and Dieter Aelvoet in 2015. They are experts in recruiting and outsourcing of technical experts and safety specialists. “AlphaZ truly represents quality, proactivity, and expertise, which has resulted in stealthy growth in recent years”, says CEO Niels Colson. “Our values and work ethic are well in line with the vision of Bert Pauwels and Pauwels Consulting. We are therefore really happy that we can leave our firm in capable hands.” Niels Colson will focus on the further expansion of the 2 other businesses: DD Engineering and INDIGI.

Bert Pauwels, CEO of Pauwels Consulting on the merger: “With this acquisition, we welcome 27 engineering talents into our family, a nice and welcome reinforcement of our team. After all, we still see a lot of growth potential in this domain”. The announcement of this acquisition follows on the successful integration of the previous takeovers and fits into the strategy of becoming one of the market leaders in Belgium.

Pauwels Consulting is a Belgian consultancy firm with over 600 experts in IT, engineering and life sciences. We offer consulting, project management and recruitment services to leading companies in Belgium and beyond. We have offices in Belgium, France, Germany, and Switzerland.

Niels Colson and Bert Pauwels acquisition AlphaZCongratulations on the acquisition! Can you briefly introduce yourself?

Niels: I am Niels Colson, 36 years old, father of two rascals that lives in Ghent as a ‘Limburger’. I have a degree as an aerospace & aviation engineer with a Master in Business from Vlerick. After my studies, I started working as a business consultant but after a while, I missed the technical aspect in my job.

Together with my Vlerick fellow student Dieter Aelvoet, I started a new adventure by taking over DD engineering that was based in Ypres. Business went so well, we decided to expand our activities a year later with AlphaZ.

How does AlphaZ distinguish itself from the competition?

Bert: From the first contact, I knew Niels and Dieter were young and ambitious entrepreneurs that had built out a great company. The two professionals hired very capable employees, and lifted AlphaZ to the next level, together with their employees, in just a few years.

Niels: AlphaZ arose from market demand, a need that we quickly identified with our customers. Project sourcing of technical experts (engineering, piping, mechanics, work planners, etc.) and safety specialists is a niche in which few consultancy companies are specialized. This, combined with our expertise and the values that our people carry out on a daily basis, was a recipe for success.

How would you describe those values and work ethics?

Niels: We highly value respect and trust in all its facets. Giving our employees the space to develop themselves and to assume their responsibilities, plays a major role in this. In addition, our drive to excellence is very important, we are always 200% committed to our projects. We do what we say and we say what we do. Personal communication and ‘straight talk’ is, therefore, the third pillar within AlphaZ.

Bert: It was very clear from our first contact: Niels and Dieter focus on the quality of their business in combination with the right values. All these ingredients are of importance if you want to succeed! AlphaZ has a strong company culture that perfectly matches Pauwels Consulting’s. A match made in heaven?

After such a successful path, you nevertheless make the decision to merge AlphaZ with Pauwels Consulting?

Niels Colson AlphaZ acquisitie

Niels: Yes, I always want to commit fully to my companies. Focus is very important, which is not always easy with 3 successful companies. I am convinced that the

consultancy trend will continue strongly and the demand for technical experts will only increase. Hence the decision to look for the right partner for AlphaZ, so we can go back to our core activities. In Pauwels Consulting, we have found the ideal partner that can offer added value to both our consultants and our customers.

The talks and negotiations went very smoothly and I’m proud of what we achieved in the short term. I can, therefore ‘hand over’ my colleagues and activities to Pauwels Consulting with confidence. I know it will feel as much as ‘a coming home’ for them, as for me.

In what way can Pauwels Consulting definitely be of added value?

Niels: With Pauwels Consulting, our customers certainly get a quality partner in terms of reputation and continuity. A large number of experts in engineering, but also in IT and life sciences can be a great addition to our big clients.

Our employees will certainly find the number and the type of projects, the large network and the new customers they can work at, very interesting. In addition, there are countless training courses, events, academies, etc. The company DNA will feel unchanged but their possibilities are much greater.

Bert: We want to continue the good work and guarantee continuity. We hope that Pauwels will feel like a 2nd home to them. We want to further support and guide all 27 employees in their specialization. On top of that, we can certainly offer additional career opportunities or challenging projects abroad.

The customers, we want to convince with our personal approach and our talented team of more than 600 experts. Above all, the fact that we can assist them in multiple domains: IT, life sciences and engineering should be of added value.

Niels Colson and Bert Pauwels talk AlphaZ acquisition

What does the future hold?

Niels: Dieter and I will continue to focus on successfully developing our two other companies: DD Engineering and INDIGI. We simply want to remain the high-quality partner that we have always been.

Bert: I have had great ambitions for over 20 years. I live and work according to the philosophy that you should try to be better today than yesterday. With this passion and dedication, I want to work hard, and together with my wonderful team, make Pauwels Consulting a European player active in Engineering, Life Sciences and IT. Becoming the biggest is not our ambition, but becoming and remaining the best, is. And I believe that this vision will surely translate in continued growth over the coming years.

2018 Pauwels Consulting Ghent Marathon: Congratulations to all runners

29 Oct 2018
On Sunday, October 28, the second edition of the Pauwels Consulting Ghent Marathon took place at the Watersportbaan in Ghent. 7000 brave runners faced the cold and windy weather and enjoyed the different runs and the atmosphere along the way and in the Topsporthal.

Unfortunately, the marathon started an hour late because some of the signalmen were not in place. Despite this setback, the majority of the 2000 marathon runners remained cheerful. A true accomplishment in its own right!

The second edition of the Pauwels Consulting Ghent Marathon will be remembered for its cold and  sunny weather. We take pride and pleasure in seeing and feeling the energy of so many runners and supporters every year again, especially on such a cold day.

Thank you all for joining us in Ghent and for your wonderful enthusiasm. We hope to see you again next year!

HR investment group Pyramid takes a stake in ORMIT

04 Oct 2018
Ghent, 3 October 2018. Pyramid NV, the HR investment group behind Pauwels Consulting, is today taking a 75 % stake in ORMIT, the Dutch HR company specialising in traineeships and leadership development.

The remaining 25 % of the shares will remain in the hands of ORMIT management. Thanks to this investment, the Belgian consultancy company Pauwels Consulting and ORMIT are now part of the same HR investment group.

“The external shareholders of ORMIT wanted to sell their shares”, says Hetty van Ee, managing director of the ORMIT group. “As a result, we went on a search for a new shareholder who shares our vision, values and growth ambitions. In recent years, ORMIT has set up and implemented increasing numbers of special traineeships at some great companies in both the Netherlands and Belgium. Thanks to our ability to attract talent from the labor market, we offer our clients access to prime (international) candidates. We want to expand even further, so we were looking for a party that could support this ambition. We decided that Pyramid NV, the HR investment group led by 3D-Investments and Bert Pauwels, was the best option.”

The Belgian consultancy company Pauwels Consulting and ORMIT are now part of the same HR investment group

“3D-Investments is a Belgian investment company that invests in companies with strong growth potential. The focus at 3D-Investments is always in the long term and on doing fair and transparent business. Bert Pauwels is the founder and managing director of Pauwels Consulting, the Belgian consultancy company with more than 520 consultants in the areas of engineering, life sciences and IT. Both parties showed a strong and sincere interest in ORMIT’s posture and concept right from the outset.”

“We are delighted with this new collaboration”, says Hans Swinnen, chairman of the board of directors at Pyramid NV and partner at 3D-Investments. “Since the beginning of our collaboration with Pauwels Consulting in 2016, we have already realized three acquisitions, alongside impressive organic growth. We are delighted with this opportunity to now also contribute to the further growth of the ORMIT group.”

“We will make sure that Pauwels Consulting and ORMIT each retain their own identity. Both companies have defined their destiny over the last two decades and built up a strong reputation. That is something we want to respect, although I think that this collaboration can create a natural cross-fertilization between both companies.”Pauwels Consulting currently has more than 520 employees on board, while the ORMIT team has over 230 employees and more than 1,600 alumni who have been developed by ORMIT. “The services provided by ORMIT and Pauwels Consulting are perfectly complementary”, says Bert Pauwels, founder and managing director of Pauwels Consulting. “ORMIT identifies young prime talent and develops their soft skills and leadership qualities during an intensive two-year growth trajectory involving various projects at different clients. Then they match their high potentials to the clients who best suit them and where they can bring the most benefits.”

“At Pauwels Consulting, we mainly focus on project sourcing and HR solutions, such as business process outsourcing, for companies looking for specific engineering, life sciences or IT expertise and skills. We also consciously invest in the training and coaching of our people. We can definitely learn something from the professionals at ORMIT on further perfecting this coaching.” “This share transfer will put us in a position to continue to grow ORMIT as an independent company, with our current enthusiastic people on board and from a perspective of the values that are important to us”, says Hetty van Ee. “Our vision, ambition and plans remain unchanged. We will continue to find, develop and connect (and bind) prime talent to our participants and look forward to realizing our further growth plans with the help of Pyramid NV!”

A wonderful cycling event along the River Scheldt. On Saturday, April 21, 2018, we gathered for the second edition of the Chairman's Classic Cycling Event in Temse.

Hans Swinnen, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Pauwels Consulting, had planned 2 wonderful tours on both banks of the River Scheldt. The cyclists with city bikes enjoyed a 27K ride and a nice boat trip, the cyclists with race bikes enjoyed a wonderful 60K ride.

Pauwels Consulting obtains SCC certificate

27 Mar 2018
At Pauwels Consulting, we attach great importance to safe working conditions and a safe working environment. To reinforce this commitment, we recently obtained the SCC certification for our business unit engineering.

We had a brief conversation with Luc Marivoet, Internal Prevention Advisor and SHE Officer at Pauwels Consulting and Jan Fyens, Director Engineering, about the purpose and benefits of SCC.

Dear Luc, dear Jan, what is SCC exactly?

Luc: SCC – VCA in Dutch – stands for ‘Safety Checklist Contractors’, but over the years the ‘Safety’ aspect has gained an ever broader meaning. The letter ‘S’ now stands for the abbreviation ‘SHE’ – ‘Safety, Health and Environment’. The SCC checklist is a checklist with questions to determine whether the SHE management system of service companies is optimally organized. This way service companies can increase safety, health and environmental awareness in the workplace.

What is the purpose of SCC?

Luc: Ultimately, the goal of SCC is to provide both employers and employees with knowledge and understanding about Safety, Health and Environment at work. This way, all parties are aware of the dangers that surround them. The SCC checklist contains rules and methods to determine when certain risks are irresponsible and at what point the right measures need to be taken in order to make the workplace safer, healthier and more environmentally conscious.

Thanks to SCC, companies can implement a structured policy to continually improve their SHE management system and to limit accidents, incidents, material damage and environmental damage.

What are the benefits of SCC?

Jan: Our management team has a clear vision about working safely. A SCC certificate offers us the opportunity and the advantage to develop a sustainable ‘safety framework’. Thanks to this framework, we not only think, talk and act in terms of security, but we also deeply integrate all these matters into a system that is uniform, clear and sustainable in the long run. After all, our business processes must always be aligned with this framework. The first welcome result of this initiative is, of course, the VCA certificate for our engineering department.

But it does not stop there! We continue to aim higher and further: a low incidence of incidents, efficient management of protective equipment, a firm and clear risk analysis of the projects and the specific tasks that our employees perform and so on. The framework itself is, of course, a very positive aspect of the SCC, but there are many other advantages.

“A client who outsources work to someone with a SCC certificate can rest assured that these activities will be carried out without risks for Safety, Health and Environment.”

Luc: Indeed. The integration of this ‘safety framework’ also means that the Engineering Department and their partners no longer have to take any action to guarantee a SHE management system, for example, because all this has already been arranged in advance. Furthermore, a SCC certificate is valid for 3 years and is guaranteed through interim audits. This allows us to perform work with an increased risk for various clients.

In addition, all employees of the Business Unit Engineering must take a SCC course and take an exam. A distinction is made between basic safety for operational staff and safety for operational managers. The purpose of this SCC training is to make operational staff and managers aware of the risks – hidden or not – while working on a construction site or working in an area with potentially dangerous situations.

Why did Pauwels Consulting certify its Business Unit Engineering?

Jan: Many of our clients require a SCC certification as a condition for carrying out work for them. This is easy and it offers them the assurance that our Engineering department is conducting safe and reliable business management. After all, a client who outsources work to someone with a SCC certificate can rest assured that these activities are carried out without risks for Safety, Health and Environment, as confirmed during an independent and objective investigation by a recognized certification institution.

Luc: Another important feature of the SCC certificate is that we check annually whether we still comply with all SCC requirements. The Business Unit Engineering of Pauwels Consulting is therefore, as it were, ‘under supervision’ of the institution that issued the SCC certificate.

How did the SCC certification process go?

Jan: First, we set up a SCC project team with Mélodie Rogiers as HR Manager, Luc Marivoet as Prevention Adviser and SHE Officer and myself as Director Engineering. We also called on an external SCC Consultant. The team met on a monthly basis for consultation. We ran by the SCC checklist with priority questions and additional questions per chapter. After each meeting, the necessary actions were taken.

Why did Pauwels Consulting also deploy an external SCC consultant?

Jan: We are growing very fast as an organization and we want to monitor the decisions and actions we take externally. We must continue to challenge and question ourselves. An external specialist keeps us sharp.

What does Pauwels Consulting want to achieve with this SCC certification?

Luc: Safety, health and the environment … these are matters that are increasingly taken into account, and rightly so. SCC is an increasingly important factor in risky work environments, even though it’s not compulsory. With this SCC certificate, we are responding to a market situation in which more and more clients require a SCC certification for service companies.

Jan: In the end, everything revolves around fewer injuries, less absenteeism due to accidents at work, less disabled people, less chance of calamities, more attention for the environment. In short: a safer and healthier working environment.

Thanks for the interview, Luc and Jan, and good luck with your SCC projects and safety framework!
