Pauwels Consulting is a Trends Gazelle 2021

04 Mar 2021

Every year, Trends Magazine selects the 250 fastest-growing companies in each province in terms of added value, workforce and cash flow. Being selected is no easy feat, but Pauwels Consulting has just managed to receive its 10th nomination. Time for a chat with Bert Pauwels, founder and managing director of Pauwels Consulting.

Congratulations on this new nomination, Bert! Pauwels Consulting is now one of the fastest-growing companies in the province of Flemish Brabant for the 10th year in a row. How does that make you feel?

Bert: Thank you. Every time we’re chosen as one of the Trends Gazelles, it makes me feel happy and proud. All the more since this is a team effort! Pauwels Consulting doesn’t yearn for recognition, but we do know that this award is an external indicator that confirms we are doing a good job. And that’s great!

We do our utmost every day to make sure we support our customers and employees in the best possible way, our figures keep improving and we give something back to society. I’m pleased and grateful that we can offer so many people job security, satisfaction and prospects, especially in these challenging times.

I certainly agree that it was a bizarre year, Bert. How do you look back on the past COVID year?

Bert: 2020 was a challenging year, to put it mildly. And the challenge is still there. Everyone has had to give up some certainties and freedoms, and the lack of future prospects can really wear people down. Many of us have seen loved ones, friends and acquaintances experience problems both on a personal and professional level. I sincerely hope that soon we will all find the resilience to pick up where we left off together. I’m counting on everyone’s understanding, solidarity and sense of civic responsibility, because we need to get through this together.

COVID-19 and the lockdowns also put Pauwels Consulting in a situation that we’d never experienced before. All our consultants usually work at customer locations, and our internal employees are used to going into the office. Suddenly, this was no longer allowed. Or it was allowed, but to a much smaller extent. It was a pretty radical change.
“Business as usual in exceptional circumstances.”
How did Pauwels Consulting respond to COVID?

Bert: We took a calm and well-considered approach with a very clear focus on the long term. We’ve always considered COVID-19 as a temporary situation, a ‘short-term problem’. Short-term issues shouldn’t be tackled by changing our strategy. On the contrary, they require us to stick to our strategy. We talked, evaluated and adjusted a lot over the past year, but our focus and philosophy always remained strong.

This allowed us to continue to recruit people and invest in the training of our staff. We’ve also completed two impressive acquisitions in the past few months. We managed to keep furlough levels to an absolute minimum, and we haven’t had to let anyone go because of COVID-19. It’s been business as usual in exceptional circumstances. It hasn’t been easy, so I’m proud that we succeeded and that we’re now reaping the benefits, which has now been confirmed again by this Trends Gazelle nomination.
Trends Gazellen 2021 - Pauwels Consulting
How do you see 2021?

Bert: Hopeful and ambitious. When spring arrives and we find the right way to live with this virus rather than be controlled by it, our society will be able to move forward again. I look at nature for inspiration. A sunflower doesn’t exactly look its best at night, but during the day it raises its head, follows the sun and displays its colours in all their splendour.

Pauwels Consulting will continue to focus on our momentum. 2021 will be characterised by further growth in Belgium and abroad. Our primary focus in that respect is the Netherlands. Last year, we acquired the ambitious engineering company Bruggenbouwers and two attractive IT companies, Developers.nl and more recently Open Web. We now have five offices in the Netherlands. If we can add a life sciences group to that, that would mean we can also serve our customers in the Netherlands with our three key areas of expertise.

What is the ultimate goal?

Bert: There is no ultimate goal. That would be too final and too restrictive. Over the next five years, we certainly want to become an international consultancy group with more than 2,500 employees and a 250 million turnover. That’s a big but realistic ambition, and I’m convinced that our team will achieve it.

By the way, we’re always looking for extra talent to join our wonderful crew! So if you’re an engineering, life sciences, IT or HR professional with the ambition to step things up a gear, you’re invited to get in touch so that we can get to know each other. We have ambitious plans, and we would love to discuss how you can be part of them!

Good news in challenging times: Pauwels Consulting acquires DCI IT

01 Mar 2021

2020 was a challenging year and 2021 will be no different. As a result, more and more companies are facing difficulties. One of these companies is DCI IT, the IT consultancy firm in Sint-Niklaas. The company was founded in 1997 but unfortunately went bankrupt recently. We are pleased to announce that we have found a great solution for 18 IT employees: we welcome them to our team today!

This injection of knowledge means a great addition to our IT team, a carefree new start for our new colleagues and an extra boost for our growth ambitions. We spoke with Bert Pauwels, founder and managing director of Pauwels Consulting, about this acquisition.

Bert, congratulations with this acquisition! How are you feeling?

Bert: “Tired but satisfied. The acquisition of DCI IT went very quickly. The company was only declared bankrupt in February 2021. The judge appointed a curator and candidate buyers were sought. We reacted quickly and worked hard, and I am pleased that we can offer a good outcome and future to 18 employees of DCI IT, who are also a welcome reinforcement of our team.

We have already invested considerably in expanding our IT team in recent years. We have hired strong consultants and have also taken over 2 IT companies in the Netherlands last year. Now we are also taking over 18 IT consultants from DCI IT in Belgium. This strengthens us in our ambition to become one of the most complete consultancy companies in Europe.”

Can you tell us more about the services of DCI IT?

Bert: “Until recently, DCI IT offered various IT services. The company consisted of two departments: their Field Service department offered a full service, while their IT Resources department offered consultancy services. The Field Service department was less compatible with the growth plan of Pauwels Consulting, but the consultants of the IT-resources department, with a focus on IT infrastructure, complement our team perfectly.”
Logo DCI IT
How did the acquisition go?

Bert: “It all happened very quickly. DCI IT was declared bankrupt just one week ago. The judge appointed Mr Reyns as curator. Our team immediately went to work to see which components and consultants we could acquire and under which conditions. During the weekend, we came to a respectful proposal that was favourable to the employees and the customers of DCI IT. The employees keep their salaries, and they get new career opportunities at Pauwels Consulting. Moreover, we can guarantee the continuity of services to the customers.

A bankruptcy is a traumatic experience and employees are often hurt and dissatisfied. That’s why we acted quickly, accurately and tactfully. From the start we had a good feeling during our talks with master Reyns. We wanted to create a win-win situation, not drive a bargain. If you don’t do that, then you can’t build a long-term relationship with your new colleagues and customers. We wanted to do things differently. This is the beginning of a great new story for the consultants and customers of DCI IT.”

Where do you envision Pauwels Consulting in 5 years?

Bert: “We are healthily ambitious: in the coming years we want to become one of the most complete providers of consultancy and project sourcing in Europe. In five years’ time, we want to grow to a group of 2,500 consultants and a turnover of 250 million euros. Because our clients operate internationally, we will also continue to support them across borders. That’s why, since our partnership with 3d Investors in 2016, we have been explicitly accelerating our organic growth with strategic acquisitions of interesting life sciences, engineering and IT companies. For example, last year alone, despite the crisis, we acquired a strong engineering company (Bruggenbouwers) and 2 strong IT companies (Developers.nl and Open Web) in the Netherlands.

Now we have taken over another great IT company in Belgium. It will certainly not be our last acquisition, since we see a lot of potential in the market, and we will always enjoy working with interesting customers and specialists, and supporting them as best as we can in their professional growth.”

Pauwels Consulting acquires Dutch Java specialist Open Web

25 Jan 2021

GHENT, 25 January 2021. Pauwels Consulting, the Belgian consultancy firm specialising in engineering, life sciences and IT, is putting the finishing touches to its third Dutch acquisition in less than a year. Open Web, the Nieuwegein-based Java and Bloomreach specialist, is following hot on the heels of Developers.nl and Bruggenbouwers.

“Open Web is a company with experienced niche specialists, interesting customers and huge growth potential”, says Bert Pauwels, founder and Managing Director of Pauwels Consulting. There was an instant rapport between the two companies. I recognised the same ambitions and people-centric corporate culture as at Pauwels Consulting. The strong grasp of Java, Bloomreach, front-end and mobile development and Open Web’s customer base complement the expertise and customers at Developers.nl – which we welcomed to the Group at the beginning of 2020.”

“With the acquisition of Open Web, we now have a base in Utrecht alongside our offices in Rotterdam and Hoofddorp. This will be beneficial to our ongoing growth in the Netherlands.”

“It feels good to leave Open Web in the hands of an experienced and warm entrepreneur like Bert Pauwels after seven years”.
Pauwels - Open Web

“It feels good to leave Open Web in the hands of an experienced and warm entrepreneur like Bert Pauwels after seven years”, state Levente Bokor and Ebrahim Aharpour, founders of Open Web. “We felt that to develop Open Web and allow our colleagues to grow, it was necessary to join a larger group. We had many options to choose from, but our rapport with Bert and Pauwels Consulting immediately won us over.

This acquisition offers new growth opportunities for our workforce and an expansion in the services we provide to our customers. At the same time, as the founders of Open Web, we now have more time for new ventures. For example, we will be able to pay more attention to the ongoing development of our e-mail security solution kevlarr.io. We look forward to working with Pauwels Consulting and Developers.nl to achieve optimal synergy for our staff and customers.”

Pauwels Consulting welcomes Open Web to the Group

25 Jan 2021

With the takeover of Open Web, Pauwels Consulting is completing its third acquisition in the Dutch market in just under a year. A remarkable feat, certainly in a time of crisis, but the founders of both companies have ambitious plans.

We asked Bert Pauwels, founder and Managing Director of Pauwels Consulting, along with Levente Bokor and Ebrahim Aharpour, founders and co-CEO and CTO of Open Web, respectively, about their plans and aspirations.

First of all, congratulations on the takeover. I see happy faces all round!

Levente: “That’s right! We had been looking for a larger party for some time to help Open Web continue to grow. We are pleased to have found our ideal growth partner in the form of Pauwels Consulting.”

Bert: “And we are very pleased to welcome another group of experienced IT specialists to the fold. This takeover fits perfectly with our growth strategy for the Dutch market.”

Levente and Ebrahim, can you briefly present Open Web?

Ebrahim: “Levente and I founded Open Web in 2014. We had experience in different IT positions at the time, and we wanted to develop new products together. To finance product development, we focused directly on consulting, too. In a relatively short period of time, Open Web has grown into a team of 35 individuals specialising primarily in Java and Bloomreach.

We mainly perform technical assignments for major clients in the private and public sectors. More than half of our colleagues are senior Java developers. Our team also consists of front-end developers and developers for mobile applications.”

Pauwels Consulting welcomes Open Web to the Group

What makes Open Web unique?

Levente: “We have grown into one of the strongest Java and Bloomreach specialists in the Netherlands in a relatively short period. Our areas of specialisation brought challenging projects and major customers to us, making it increasingly easy to further bolster our team with experienced Java specialists.

We see ourselves as a team of driven experts who take each other to the next level. We like to do more than is expected of us, both for our customers and our professional development.

We have also invested a great deal of time and energy into our people in recent years. Despite the fact that we often work for different customers, we are still a close-knit team – one that enjoys working together, sharing knowledge and, above all, having fun.”

And that appealed to you, Bert?

Bert: “Absolutely. As you know, we are always on the lookout for interesting companies to further strengthen our Group. When Open Web and – in particular – Levente and Ebrahim came onto our radar, we had no doubts. We immediately felt an excellent rapport between us. We recognised the ambitions of Levente and Ebrahim and their clear focus on the development and happiness of the people in their team.”

Why was Open Web looking for a potential buyer?

Levente: “Several reasons. As I mentioned earlier, Ebrahim and I are keen on developing our own products. Having to focus both on consulting and product development hampered the growth opportunities of both activities, which is why we decided to find a partner that could accelerate the growth of our consulting business without changing the DNA and culture of our team. That was the top priority for us.”

Ebrahim: “That’s why we went with Pauwels Consulting. Pauwels Consulting is a major group with big plans in the Netherlands and focuses strongly on the professional and personal development of its consultants. This acquisition gives our people more growth opportunities, enables us to do even more for our customers, and gives us the opportunity to pay more attention to the ongoing development of our e-mail security solution kevlarr.io in the near future.”

What appealed to Open Web besides the ambitions and corporate culture?

Bert: “In early 2020, we acquired Developers.nl and Bruggenbouwers, two strong Dutch consultancy firms with offices in Rotterdam and Hoofddorp. This was an opportunity to attract another IT specialist with complementary knowledge and services, a complementary customer base and a branch in Nieuwegein. The acquisitions complement each other nicely, and the Nieuwegein office is an interesting strategic foundation for our ongoing growth in the Netherlands.”

“Above all, I also see many opportunities for cross-pollination between our IT teams in Belgium, Rotterdam and Nieuwegein. We are getting stronger every time, giving us even more opportunities to help our people develop. Our customers and our employees will all benefit from this.”

It’s a fantastic decision, Bert. Congratulations to all of you once again on this takeover and good luck with your plans.

Pauwels Consulting is completing its third Dutch takeover in less than a year with the acquisition of Open Web, the Java and Bloomreach specialist based in Nieuwegein.

Will you join our team as a recruiter?

17 Apr 2020
Over the last two years, we have grown from 50 to 80 people. Enormous growth, but we are still looking for a recruiter or recruitment consultants to join our team and make our consultants & clients happy!

Things are moving fast at Pauwels Consulting and there’s no sign of slowing down any soon. We hired 14 recruiters in 2019, 6 in 2018 and 2 account managers for our internal team in Belgium. In 2020, we foresee the same growth.

We sat down with Valentijn Velghe, our senior recruiter in charge of internal recruitment and coaching, to learn more about the growth of our recruitment team.

Valentijn, you’ve been at Pauwels for almost 3 years now. How did / do you experience the growth of the company?

When I started in 2017, we had a rather small internal team, mostly based in Ghent & Diegem. Now, almost 3 years later, our internal team consists of more than 80 people and is working from Diegem, Antwerp, Brussels & of course still in Ghent as well. It was really great to get to know all those people and see them evolve throughout the years.

But not only our own internal team experienced serious growth, also our consultant group grew exponentially. I don’t know the figures by heart, but I do believe it’s around + 650 people in Belgium This all makes the environment more dynamic & interesting for everyone – not only during business hours but also at our afterwork drinks & events ?

Does your internal recruitment approach differ from  freelance/consultancy recruitment?

Not really actually. As a commercial recruiter, I always tried to find the best fit for our clients & the candidate itself, but I mostly put a strong emphasis on the candidate experience and wanted to make sure that first of all he or she wanted the job I presented. What our clients thought or wanted at this specific point in time was not that important for me – but that’s our little secret ?.

The reason for this quite unique approach is because I firmly believe that motivation, drive & passion are still key indicators if your candidate will perform well in his job and during his possible future application. During many cases I was right and while on paper the candidate wasn’t always the perfect fit, he or she blew the hiring managers away during the interview(s).

As an internal recruiter, I would like to keep the same approach. Motivation, drive, passion, interest & curiosity are key indicators for me if my possible future co-worker will outperform on his new job or underperform.

When you look for new Pauwels people, what are you hoping to find?

We are looking for people who really fit into our family. We’re an ambitious, dynamic and a bit crazy team and that’s what I expect from new colleagues as well. If I don’t feel a genuine interest in our story & our company policy, then most of the time they won’t fit that well with the co-workers.

Actually, co-workers might be the wrong way to phrase it. Friends & companions is, I think, a better way to say it. We truly are a brady bunch so people who like to keep it 100% professional will be a bit blow away by our eccentric & active friends ?.

However, don’t be scared by this! Most of the time – after seeing some candidates – people are truly overwhelmed & enthusiastic by Pauwels Consulting – it’s a part of my job after all ?

Do you actively look for complementary personalities in a team?

Yes, yes, yes! It’s very important to me that colleagues can learn from each other and complement each other. This is a key success factor in order to become a top-performing team, but for this to happen, people need to have characters & personalities that go well with one another.

Do you think there could be a recruiter in everyone, even if they didn’t study anything like it?

Absolutely! I think I am a perfect example of this ? My career started as a 5th and 6th-grade high school history teacher. It was a job I truly liked & loved, but sadly in 2017, there were no longer career opportunities for me in my area. Then I started looking for a job in the private industry where I could use my social skills, creativity and actually – now that I think about it – my silly & humorous approach to live and working all together. This latter aspect was very important to me since I didn’t want a job where I would gaze at the clock until it was 16 o’clock. I wanted a job with a big fun factor, but also with a clear goal ahead. This is something I truly found at Pauwels Consulting ?

So as you can see, your educational background or previous experience isn’t that important for me. Your personality on the other hand is!

Curious as to what a Pauwels Consulting recruitment consultant does? Take a look at our little video: a day in the life of a recruiter

Interested in joining our wonderful team?

What does the onboarding phase look like?

We have quite an extensive onboarding phase & training scheme – for which I’m responsible together with my colleagues Tijs & Saskia. The new recruitment consultant will start with the basics of the course and will gradually get more difficult tasks & subjects. One of the more fun & challenging obstacles our newbies have to face is the Commercial Training with Tijs where the newbie has to outperform & outsell Tijs in a personal one-on-one battle. No one has ever won – me included ?

No reason to stress though! Some people are up and running after only 2 months, some after 6 months. This is also the reason why we have 3 people who are in charge of training & coaching since we want to make sure that everyone gets the attention they need & deserve.

And after that?

After this training period, we, of course, keep guiding & coaching you and even start to look possible future endeavors of tasks. As an example, some people truly love to go to job fairs and enjoy this overall experience. Well, then we make sure that, that specific recruiter can go to many job fairs and even can get involved in a new ‘job fair strategy-team’. There is plenty of work to go around ?

Do you have some kind of proud father feeling when they have their first placement or start excelling?

(laughs) Actually I have. As an ex-teacher, I love it when coworkers give me feedback that they closed their first deal thanks to me or that they were able to find the perfect candidate based on my tips & tricks. My nickname at the office is Mr.Teacher for a reason of course ?

Are we looking for any candidates right now?

Always! Although our recruitment group has grown a lot lately, I am always looking for new enthusiastic colleagues & friends – I can barely keep up with the growth ?. But do remember; I need them to have passion, motivation & an overall insightful way of working.

Do you have any advice for people that would like to apply?

#YOLO ?

Pauwels Consulting accelerates growth in the Netherlands with the acquisition of Bruggenbouwers

GHENT - Pauwels Consulting, the Belgian consultancy firm for Engineering, Life Sciences and IT, has announced that it has taken over Dutch contract staffing firm Bruggenbouwers. With offices in Hoofddorp and Breda, Bruggenbouwers has specialised in civil engineering contract staffing since 2011. The acquisition comes very soon after the acquisition of Developers.nl and will reinforce our position in the Netherlands.

About founders Patrick, Sander and Marc, and Bruggenbouwers

Patrick Bochem is married and has a daughter, Liv. He started his career with Vitae Inter AT, the very first contract staffing company on the market, after an unexpected interview at the beach. He learned the ropes there and discovered that his strength lies in setting up new markets and locations. The training and management of colleagues and consultants was always key.

When he founded Bruggenbouwers together with his brother Sander and his friend Marc in 2011, Patrick took on the company’s operational management. Sander, who is a passionate sports enthusiast, had already earned his stripes in various positions in the car leasing and mediation world. Marc already had a lot of experience as the director of a leading contract staffing firm and as a commercial manager at Omega Pharma. Together, they are responsible for Bruggenbouwers’ commercial activities.

A quality niche approach

Bruggenbouwers was established based on a strong conviction: it aims to provide quality connections for civil engineering professionals. “The lack of quality at our previous employers bothered us. That’s what brought us together”, Patrick says. When they started back in 2011, the economic market conditions were not particularly favourable. However, Patrick, Sander and Marc managed to build a great organisation. “From the outset, our focus was on quality, and it still is today”, Marc agrees. “We can engage in conversations about professional content. We understand what our talented professionals and our customers need and what drives them.”

“This approach is also what makes us unique and what sets us apart from the competition”, Sander says. “We know the market demands and we often proactively recruit talent”, Patrick adds. “This always keeps us two steps ahead of the competition.” Bruggenbouwers positions itself as a true specialist company rather than a general contract staffing agency.

“We’re always very lean and mean”, Patrick says. “We can act quickly, we create our own opportunities and we focus on results. However, when you’re growing quickly, you need certain processes. That’s something we didn’t have that much experience with ourselves. We were facing a type of glass ceiling, as it were. That’s also the reason why we are joining a larger organisation. We need synergy in order to move to the next stage.”

“We welcome Bruggenbouwers into our organisation with open arms because of its story and approach”, Bert explains. “It has the market experience, the knowledge and the brand recognition. Building a company with a solid reputation takes years. Our companies’ businesses are comparable, although we operate in different geographical areas. We are similar and complementary at the same time.”

For Sander, Patrick and Marc, things soon became clear. “You recognise that same passion in each other. Bert’s positive energy and entrepreneurship appealed to us. The conversation was very open: let’s see how we can help each other. Bert also immediately told us that Bruggenbouwers was a diamond in the rough and that he needed us in order to take Bruggenbouwers to the next level. That left quite an impression.”

Growth in the Netherlands

As an entrepreneur, you can never sit back and relax. There are always opportunities. Bruggenbouwers currently offers its customers and employees flexibility with its contract to permanent formula. Employees are posted for a year and then become permanent customer employees if both parties are satisfied. In the future, we aim to keep our talent in-house and we are looking forward to expanding our services. “We also see a lot of potential in new customer segments such as public procurement”, Bert adds. Bruggenbouwers has ambition: it has its eye on Germany and Belgium. Some of its employees are already working in Antwerp. “We want to create great career opportunities for our employees by expanding”, Marc says.

“You don’t come across people like Marc, Patrick and Sander very often”, Bert continues. “In the coming months, we need to get to know each other very well and strengthen our cooperation. The confidence is there and I look forward to the growth we can achieve together in the Netherlands.” Patrick adds: “We’re now grabbing the bull by the horns for the exciting period that is to come. We’ll have to see what happens after that. We can look back on an exciting time, and we’re very much looking forward to the future.”

Pauwels Consulting is taking over all Bruggenbouwers’ services and employees. Founders Marc, Patrick and Sander will stay on board after the acquisition to facilitate the transition process and achieve further growth. Following this acquisition, Pauwels Consulting will employ 1,100 experts in life sciences, engineering and IT in Belgium, the Netherlands and France. Pauwels Consulting Group is currently achieving more than 100 million euros in sales.
